| I officially have a real internship with a real tech company. Today was my first day.
OMG i am so fucking relieved right now. I had been seriously stressed about finding a job. The people are really cool. I even get my own cube lol.
I'd type more, but I really need to go home and eat some food.

| As much as I know I'm supposed to hate Microsoft and all its crap, recently I've been learning a bit more about it. In particular, Visual Studio 2008 is now free for college students. My first impression is "holy fucking shit this is a powerful program". I can almost see why they charge so much for it normally. I'm sort of getting the hang of C# now. It's a pretty neat language, but I am still very glad I learned C++ first. Programming languages these days seem to be getting higher and higher level and using them often no longer requires the understanding of even basic things such as pointers and memory management.
Let me make one thing clear though: I still strongly dislike Vista and find it to be the second or third worst operating system I've ever used.
I've also been working in Java a lot lately on my senior project. For the most part, the more I learn the more I like about it. It seems to be a useful skill to have these days anyway.
One thing I'm sort of unsure of is *nix vs. Windows development. So far my academic programming experience has been almost exclusively Linux-based. None of my professors has ever even mentioned the big-name Windows tools such as Visual Studio. At first I thought this was strange given that Microsoft programs are so popular, but then I realized that they are all a bunch of old-school Unix geeks. At this point I am inclined to try learning as much about both sides as possible. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

This video was apparently done by the same people as "Zeitgeist", a conspiracy movie Brian posted awhile back. It goes a little bit further though and directly contradicts many scientific discoveries without providing any real evidence. In this video they are a little bit more bold and make some claims that are blatantly false. I found it pretty entertaining.
I should get back to my homework now. | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| I got back from Maine last night. It was awesome of course. I got to hang out with my cousins for a few days. I hadn't seen them for two years, but apparently in that time they've all become total potheads. There was much drinking and smoking and random craziness.
We had a memorial for my grandpa who died in June. Around 50 people showed up, about half of whom I had never met. People shared random stories about his life. I didn't know him very well, so it was mostly all new to me.
Anyway how about some stuff? Who's up for hiking a 14er this weekend? | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| So I've been trying out the vaunted Safari 3.0, which has recently been ported to Windows. I must say it has some nice functionality. The ability to resize any text field is pretty neat. All the basic features such as bookmarks, tabs, etc. are present and work as expected. The OSX-like appearance is very similar to that of iTunes. It looks a little out of place on a Windows machine, but is nice enough. The options menus are quite nicely setup as well.
Now for some bitching...
Apple has been bragging about how incredibly fast Safari supposedly is. The first thing that really stood out when I began using it was how much slower it is than Firefox. I'm sure this can be attributed to its still being in beta and therefore not yet totally optimized, but at the same time Apple is already bragging about how much it kicks the shit out of all other browsers. The advertising just seems premature. It isn't unusuable or anything, but I definitely notice a speed difference between it and Firefox. And yes, I cleared the cache in Firefox before comparing page loading speeds.
There are some other problems as well. It has the extremely annoying habit of resizing the window every time it is minimized. iTunes occasionally does this too. It is one of the most obnoxious features I have ever encountered in any program and there doesn't seem to be any way to turn it off.
One last little bit of weirdness is that by default the toolbar doesn't contain a home button. It can be easily added via a menu, but I find this to be a bizzare choice by Apple nonetheless.
Almost forgot... This browser also lacks a standardized way for handling extensions the way Firefox does. A quick google reveals that it does support them, but that they all have to be installed in their own way. Hopefully Apple is working on a standard extension manager.
It also seems to have difficulty handling flash. About half of the links I've clicked on don't work at all and the other half load particularly slowly.
I'll give it a chance for a few more days. | comments: Leave a comment |
